Additional software maybe added to the image periodically, schools will be notified of any additions we make so they can make additions locally. We are always on the look out for any great OSS for students/teachers to use.
3rd party software updates on machines will need to be monitored and completed at the local school level.
The SID DVD
The Sandhurst Supplementary Install Disk (SID) comes with all Macbooks that have the Sandhurst image installed on them.
The purpose of the SID is:
to enable all users to repair or reinstall any software on their Macbook,
re-imaging a laptop if need be,
remove any additional tech support required at the school/local level as all users (teachers/students) are shown how to use the SID and are responsible for 1st level tech support on their Macbook.
support resource for school based 'Tech Angels'.
Software Updates
Schools need to develop a simple solution to enable all Macbooks to be updated to the latest software updates. A perfect job for school based 'Tech Angels'.
A simple solution for Macbook software updates is listed below as a way to not have all students/teachers downloading all updates at once from the web and clogging up internet bandwidth and downloads.
Create a folder on a shared server (accessible by staff and students)
Inside that folder, create 2 folders, 1 called 'Current software updates' and the other called 'Previous updates'.
One person (staff member or Tech angels) to go to http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and download the latest 'Mac OSX combo update'. Save it to the 'Current software updates' folder on teh server.
Move any update in that folder to the 'Previous updates' folder so if users miss an update or to they can install the previous ones if required.
Email or message users to let them know they can connect to the server, download the update to thier machine and then run it.
For third party software or other software:
Again create a folder on the server for 'Other applications'
Download and install updates or additional software you want users to use.
Message users to let them know updates are available.
